Remove Harsh Shadows from Product Photos

Soften a hard tabletop shadow or clean up an uneven backdrop. Give your product more attention in the frame while asking the editor to retain its shape, label and natural depth.

Target edit

Illustration of the editing goal, not a generated photo. Upload your image to compare actual results.

The editing goal

Clean up distracting shadows while keeping the product grounded.

Start with a focused change and tell the editor which details to keep:

  • Product shape, color and texture
  • Label text and logos
  • The original background unless you request a change

Compare fine details with your original after generating. Results vary with the source photo and instruction.

Reduce a distracting cast shadow

Target the dark area extending across a tabletop or wall. A focused instruction can help separate the product from its background without requesting new packaging or props.

Keep the product grounded

Ask for a small contact shadow beneath the item while softening the larger shadow behind it. This direction suits products that should still appear to rest on a surface.

Choose what stays in the scene

Retain an existing colored backdrop or lifestyle setting. If you also want a new background, complete and review that as a separate edit.

Cleaner lighting for everyday product photos

Boxes on a tabletop

A hard side shadow can distract from a package. Compare the straight box edges, small label text and the surface immediately below the item. A faint contact shadow may be useful even when the larger cast shadow is reduced.

Shoes and accessories

A darker patch behind a shoe can merge with its outline. Ask for softer background lighting and check laces, straps and sole edges. Removing all shading may make the item look flat or disconnected from the surface.

Bottles and reflective packaging

A bottle may contain reflections, transparent edges and a cast shadow at once. This task is aimed at shadows, not every highlight. Inspect the outline and label carefully and use a more specific instruction if a reflection should remain.

A starting prompt for your photo

Use a prompt below to fill the editor, then adjust it for your picture. Your uploaded photos stay in place; selecting a prompt does not start generation.

Soften harsh shadows

Keep a subtle contact shadow so the product does not appear to float.

Soften the harsh cast shadow around the product while retaining a subtle natural contact shadow. Preserve product shape, label text, logo, color, texture and original background. Do not redesign the product, add props or change the composition.

Remove the cast shadow

Ask for the visible background shadow to be removed; inspect grounding and edges.

Remove the distracting cast shadow on the background around the product. Keep the product’s own natural shading and its original shape. Preserve product shape, label text, logo, color, texture and original background. Do not redesign the product, add props or change the composition.

Background shadows only

Target shadows on the backdrop, leaving shading on the product itself.

Even out unwanted shadows on the background only. Do not flatten or relight the product itself. Preserve product shape, label text, logo, color, texture and original background. Do not redesign the product, add props or change the composition.

Make it your own. Describe the shadow’s location: ‘Soften the dark shadow to the right of the bottle. Keep a faint contact shadow beneath it and leave the label unchanged.’

How to remove Harsh Shadows from Product Photos

  1. Step 01

    Upload your product shot

Choose a photo with readable packaging and a clear product outline. Check whether the unwanted darkness is a cast shadow, a reflection or shading on the item itself.

  2. Step 02

    Choose soften or remove

Start by softening the cast shadow. Use the background-only instruction if you want to retain the product’s own highlights and shading.

  3. Step 03

    Check edges and packaging

Sign in to generate, then compare the label, cap, outline and contact with the surface. Save the result after checking that the product still looks accurate.

Get more from your original photo

Start with a product photo where the item’s outline and label are clearly visible. Decide whether you want the cast shadow softened or removed. Keep a natural contact shadow if the product should sit on a surface. Reflective packaging and transparent objects need extra care because shadows and reflections can overlap.

Cast shadows and contact shadows serve different roles

A cast shadow extends away from a product, while a contact shadow sits close to where it touches a surface. The default preset asks for the distracting shadow to be softened without removing all sense of depth. Compare both areas in the result.

Keep the background or choose a separate background edit

This page defaults to preserving the existing scene. If you need a white studio background instead, use the product photo editor or background tool. Combining shadow removal, recoloring and scene replacement in one request can make it harder to check product accuracy.

Do not confuse shadow cleanup with detail recovery

If an area is so dark that the source contains no readable detail, the editor may infer a plausible surface. That is not reliable recovery of hidden label text or texture. Keep the source and use a better-lit photograph when those details matter.

Remove product shadows: frequently asked questions

Can I keep the original background?

Yes. The presets request shadow cleanup while retaining the background. AI edits can still alter nearby texture, so inspect the surface around the product and any repeated patterns.

Can I keep a soft shadow underneath the product?

Choose Soften harsh shadows. It asks for a subtle contact shadow to remain. Check that the shadow direction, contact point and product outline look consistent with the source photo.

Will this remove reflections too?

The presets target shadows, not reflections or glare. Reflective packaging can be difficult to separate from its surroundings. Name the unwanted area in the instruction and check the result carefully.

Will the logo and label stay accurate?

The instruction asks the model to preserve them, but fine text may change. Compare labels at full size before using the image for a listing. A new photo is preferable when the original label is unreadable.

Does this guarantee a marketplace-ready white background?

No. This workflow preserves the background unless you ask otherwise. A generated light backdrop is not a guarantee of exact white pixels or acceptance by a marketplace. Check the final image against the requirements that apply to your listing.

Do I need to sign in, and can I use starter credits?

Sign in to generate. Eligible new accounts receive starter credits, and all models are available when your balance covers the displayed cost. Nano Banana 2 is selected by default. Check the total in the editor and purchase more credits if needed.

Which files can I upload, and are my results private?

Upload JPG, PNG or WebP photos. Free generations use public mode and results may be selected for public display. Watermark-free downloads require purchase access. Review the account options on the pricing page and keep a copy of your original photo.
